Evaluation - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Music Video
Key conventions of a music video can vary depending on the genre and style of the music. However, there are a number of conventions that apply to most music videos.
There are three main types of music video; narrative based, performance based and concept based. A music video involving a narrative is based around a particular storyline often following a protagonist. A performance based video is almost completely based upon shots of the artist or band performing. This involves lip-syncing to make it seem as if the artist or band were performing live. The third time of video is concept based – this type of video is often unusual and based around a single idea. For my video, I chose to use two of the three types of music video, performance and narrative. I then decided to interweave the performance with the narrative. The protagonist in the narrative is on his way to see the band in the performance shots. I felt that this added more purpose to including performance shots in my music video.
The artist often appears in the majority of music videos, either performing or having a cameo role inside a narrative. I used this convention in my video by adding the band in the performance shots, as well as using my lead guitarist in a cameo role in the narrative. I believed that having the band in the narrative as well as performance shots provided more emphasis on them, which is the overall purpose of the music video, to promote the band and their song.
Editing is a vital convention of music videos. It is important that the pace of shot cuts relates to the song (e.g. if the song has a fast tempo, the speed in which shots are cut is faster in comparison to a slower song. Jump cuts are the most predominant editing technique used in music videos. Transitions such as fade and dissolve are also very common in music videos as they create a different effect to cuts. I used jump cuts throughout my music video as I felt that they suited the style and tempo of the music, whereas fade and dissolve transitions would suit a slower song.
Music videos include a number of different types of shots, such as long shots, mid shots and close ups.  This is done to create contrast as well as to add emphasis on the artist/protagonist’s emotions and facial expressions. I have a large variation of shot types in my music video. I use a number of long establishing shots, as location has huge significance in my video.  I also use mid and close up shots to emphasise facial expressions of the protagonist.
Mise-en-scene refers to the props used in a scene for the production of a music video. For the performance side of my music video, I used a number of different props that would be used during a live gig. Props such as musical instruments, amplifiers and microphones add a sense of realism to the video. In performance style videos, costume often reflects the genre of the song. I have used this convention in mine – After researching a number of Alternative and Rock bands, I imitated these bands and dressed my actors in the same style of clothing.
Another main convention would be lighting. Lighting can have a huge effect on the appearance of the video. The use of backlighting is prominent in my music video. This produces a glowing effect on the subject, which helps attract the audience’s attention to it.
Apart from the song itself, non diegetic sound can be added to a music video if it is part of a narrative. Costume often reflects on the genre. It is an important convention because it has a slight influence on how the viewers will dress because they use some of the celebrities as role models. Colours often set the mood of a song through creating an atmosphere. During the post-production stage, I added colour correction filters to the video. I added a blue tint to the footage to give the video a ‘cinematic’ feel.
I studied Andrew Goodwin’s Music Video theory and implemented a number of his key aspects into my video. Goodwin’s theory suggests that music videos frequently demonstrate genre characteristics. As half of my music video is performance based, I incorporate a number of stage performance shots with my band.
He also states that there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. This occurs at several points in my video. For example, shots in the rain over the lyrics “You can’t fight the feeling, and all is the same, the pouring rain”. As the song is named “Everybody’s on the run” and the chorus mainly consists of the lyrics “Hang in there love, you gotta hold on”, the bulk of my narrative is about a protagonist running through several locations in order to reach a girl. I feel that these tie into the lyrics quite well.
There is also a relationship between music and visuals – with a performance based video, the band must mime for it to appear as if they were performing live. Build-ups in the music are also illustrated in the visuals, as the climax of the narrative is reached at the same time as the Middle 8, which is often the climax of the music.
In order for record labels to promote a band or artist, they require a number of shots of the band/artist itself. I have taken this into account in my video, by making around 50% of my video close-up shots of my band members. This would help record labels promote the band easily.
6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).
Digipak
There are a number of key conventions for a Digipak. The main ones include; a barcode, track list, record label, name of band and album, design of the CD and a spine. I have used all of these conventions in my own Digipak.
I attempted to make my Digipak appear in the same style as the genre of music of the artist. This was achieved through both Mise-en-scene and Editing. Editing of the main image of the Digipak is often one of the most important aspects as the image takes up the entire Digipak. In the post-production stage of my Digipak, I used several filters on the image itself to give it a ‘cold’ and ‘90s’ feel. This was achieved by adding a ‘light blue tint’. Mise-en-scene is also important with an image – costume, props and location provide meaning to the image and the album cover.
Poster
Key conventions for a poster include; name of the band, name of the album and the main image (if applicable). These have all been incorporated into my poster.
In order to retain a level of consistency, I made the design of the poster similar to the style of my music video. Vignettes and contrast created a reference to the use of lighting in my video. I emphasised the importance of promoting the album itself by adding the release date of the video on the poster in a large font, covering almost a quarter of the poster.

Evaluation - Question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Each individual product serves a different purpose. The music video illustrates to the audience the idea behind the song and its lyrics. It also provides the audience with an idea of the style of the song. The Digipak gives the artist a sense of identity. The design, contents and features of the Digipak informs the audience of what type of artist they are personality and characteristics-wise. The poster is designed to simply promote and inform the audience of the album and its release date. After researching a number of Britpop, Indie and Alternative rock bands, I felt it was extremely important to relate the three products to some extent. Therefore I created a several recurrent themes. The first theme was based on the fact that all of my products focused largely on the lead singer. The music video, Digipak and poster contain images and clips that have close-up shots of the singer, providing emphasis on him rather than his surroundings. The second theme was a “cold” feel. I often associate the colour blue to a ‘cool’ and ‘chilled’ characteristic. I felt that this could be a nice effect to use in my products and texts. I achieved this look by using a number of different lighting and colour correction filters on all of my products during post production. My music video explains the meaning behind the lyrical content of the song through a narrative. As the name of the song is about running, I decided to produce a storyline that helped me explain this. The Digipak has helped me give the artist an identity, through the facial expressions of the lead singer in the images. The poster helps easily promote the album with the release date in large bold text. This is the largest piece of text on the poster. The audience are also immediately aware of whose album it is with the extreme close-up shot of the band’s lead singer as the main image, covering the entire poster.

Evaluation - Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Feedback is a key factor in being able to understand my target audience as well as developing my products in order to appeal to them. My target audience both male and female ages 18-40. This is because of the style of music and how the majority of the target audience will have lived through the Britpop era.
I received feedback for all three of my products. I generated the feedback in a number of different ways, using video interviews, polls, surveys and discussions. The people I interviewed include; the band, the target audience and the teachers.
I asked for feedback on the different drafts of my video throughout the production phase of my music video. This helped me continuously improve my product. After three drafts, I had created a completed version using the feedback I had received. The feedback I was given included comments such as using different shots, filters and designs.
During the editing process, I used a number of different colour correction filters, which turned out to be one of the key factors in the overall look of my video. After using over five filters, I narrowed it down to my two favourite and rendered the music video out in two versions, each one with the chosen filters. I then asked a group of people to analyse the videos and select which version they found most appealing.
I then took this feedback into account and used the most popular filter. I then created a side-by-side video comparing the video with and without the colour correction filter.

Evaluation - Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used a number of different media technologies in the construction of my products. This ranged from the use of over a dozen software packages and websites, to filming equipment and lighting. Throughout the entire project, I used Blogger to document my work. This included all planning work, research, final products and a diary to keep an account of the work that I had carried out during the week. There both advantages and disadvantages towards using Blogger. One advantage would be its easiness to learn and use. The layout made it simple to create new blog posts efficiently. Another advantage was the fact that it is accessible virtually anywhere, meaning that I was able to upload blog posts during shoots on location with my mobile. However, a disadvantage would be the upgrade. Several months ago, Blogger updated its layout and stopped support for Internet Explorer. This meant that I was unable to view several of my posts until I upgraded to Firefox. During the planning process of my products, I used a DSLR to take images of potential locations in London to film. I chose to use a digital camera as I felt that it had many more benefits than if I were to use a film camera. The ability to instantly playback images that I have taken helped me in deciding whether or not I needed to retake the photo if I wasn’t happy with the lighting. The fact that I was also able to take a much larger amount of images meant that I could go to multiple locations without the need to carry extra film around with me. I used websites that converted my planning documents to PDF format. These websites include Scribd and SlideShare. Some documents that I completed on paper such as sketches and storyboards were scanned into the computer and then uploaded to Blogger. Part of my planning was to create an animatic in order to create a rough guide for my music video. I sketched the animatic and scanned it onto the computer. I then imported these sketches into Sony Vegas Pro 12.0, a video editing software package. There are a huge amount of benefits to modern editing software, compared to the older analogue methods. Using software packages such as Vegas enabled me to edit my video with incredible accuracy, with the ability to zoom in frame by frame, whereas years back people would have had to physically splice the tapes together which required much more skill and time. We are also able to create an infinite number of video and audio layers which makes it much easier and less time consuming to edit clips. I rendered a number of drafts throughout the project in order to show how my products developed. The music video drafts were uploaded to YouTube, a video sharing website. The drafts of my ancillary texts were uploaded directly to Blogger. I used two different graphics editors to create the draft and final versions of my poster and Digipak. These programs were Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop CS3 and CS5. I used a number of features on these programs in order to help me create certain features of my products. These features include the magic wand tool, spot healing brush, and the actions tool. For the research stage of my project, I created a number of documents in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and then converted them using SlideShare and Scribd. I then uploaded them to Blogger. I received feedback several times for my different projects. I felt that the best way of recording this information was through surveys and polls. I used the website SurveyMonkey to send surveys across the internet to peers and teachers to carry out. The information was then sent to me in the form of a chart. I then screen captured this and then uploaded the information to SlideShare. When filming my music video, I used a number of different lighting equipment, including redheads and fill lights. I used the Canon 550D to film my entire music video. I felt that this camera would provide the best results as it handles well in low lighting. I used a 50mm 1.8f prime lens, which gave my music video a more cinematic look. For my Digipak cover, I used the Canon 550D again to take the images and Adobe Photoshop CS3 to piece together the final products. For the poster, I used images from the Digipak photo shoot. I used a number of different websites to publish my work and to receive feedback. These websites include; YouTube, Facebook, Dailymotion, and Twitter. These social media websites are a great way of gathering audience feedback and data. These websites are used by millions of users every day, which provides me with a vast amount of potential feedback. The fact that it is also easily accessible to the audience makes them more open to viewing the products and giving feedback.
